MetalDetector

Gull Point Beach · low tide · 6:41 pm

The beach keeps secrets.

Every summer, a million people lose a little something in the sand. Every winter, the storms dig up something older. You have a detector, a shovel, and until the tide comes back.

Headphones help. The good finds whisper.

Retro travel poster of a beach at sunset: a beachcomber in a straw hat sweeps a metal detector along the waterline, gulls overhead, a striped lighthouse on the headland, a green bottle and a glint of gold in the foreground sand.

Sweep, listen, dig

Switch the detector on (sound on), then move over the sand. Low grunts are iron. Mid tones are pull tabs and jewelry. High, clean tones are coins. When the signal peaks, dig. You get 12 digs before the tide comes in.
